So, you’ve booked your family session—cue the excitement (and maybe a tiny bit of outfit panic). The first question I always receive after clients have booked a family session is “Do you have any recommendations for picking outfits?”. And yes, in fact, I do. Here is your Family Photography Outfit guide (made easy) to help you feel confident and camera-ready.
No matter your style or inspiration—this guide is designed to take the guesswork out of planning your outfits so you can focus on what matters most: being present, having fun, and creating lasting memories. We all have the Pinterest board with the perfect inspiration but often there’s a gap when translating that inspiration to pieces in our closet.
Let’s walk through it step-by-step, from choosing a color palette to where to shop and how to coordinate everyone’s look (without dressing like clones).
Before you even open a shopping tab, think about the feeling/overall emotion you want for your session. Think through:
Where will the photos be taken (beach, garden, home, studio)?
What season is it?
How do you want your photos to feel—casual and candid, romantic and dreamy, elegant and editorial?
Your answers will help shape your style direction. If you’re unsure, look through your Pinterest board to see what primarily rises to the surface. This is a great place to create a mood board. Collect images you love and notice the tones, fabrics, and styling that repeat. That’s your starting point.
Choose 3–4 tones that complement each other, and stick within that palette. I always recommend starting with one outfit—usually Mom’s or the piece you’re most excited about—and then coordinating everyone else around it.
Timeless combinations:
Neutrals: cream, beige, taupe, soft white
Earthy tones: olive, rust, terracotta, ivory
Coastal tones: chambray, navy, sand, sage
Romantic: mauve, blush, soft gray, dusty blue
Stick to muted or natural tones, and avoid neon colors or overly saturated shades. These tend to be distracting and don’t photograph well. (*This doesn’t mean avoid that fun pop of color in a hat or dress, just use it sparingly.)
Here’s the magic formula: coordinate without matching.
You want each family member to feel like an individual, while also looking cohesive as a group. Mixing textures and subtle patterns is the secret sauce.
Here’s how to do it:
Use patterns sparingly: One or two patterns per group is enough. Think florals, gingham, or subtle stripes.
Vary the scale: If one person wears a bold floral, others can wear a solid or a small-scale print. *Avoid patterns that are smaller than a dime
Balance it out: If one outfit has a busy pattern, keep the rest simpler to create harmony.
Play with texture: Linen, denim, corduroy, cotton gauze, knits, and lace add depth without distracting.
Example: If Mom is wearing a flowing floral maxi dress, Dad could wear a light chambray shirt and khaki pants, while the kids wear solids or soft neutrals with a bit of texture (like a waffle-knit sweater or linen romper).
Avoid identical outfits, loud logos, or anything too trendy—to help your photos feel timeless for years to come.
The best photos happen when your family is relaxed and able to move. Whether you’re dancing, playing, or snuggling, your outfits should allow for natural moments and real connection.
Choose:
Dresses that twirl, not cling
Soft, breathable fabrics for kids
Stretchy or flexible materials for dads and littles
Layers that add visual interest and keep everyone comfortable
Think less stiff, more cozy-chic.
Bonus tip: Skip the stiff shoes or heels unless your session calls for them. Barefoot moments or comfy sandals often feel more authentic—especially outdoors. If you’re indoors, and it’s seasonally appropriate, don’t be afraid to lose the shoes and stay in socks.
